Nitrate Removal by Zero-Valent Metals: A Comprehensive Review

نویسندگان

چکیده

Nitrate is a widespread water contaminant that can pose environmental and health risks. Various conventional techniques be applied for the removal of nitrate from wastewater, such as biological denitrification, ion exchange, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis. Compared to traditional methods, chemical denitrification through zero-valent metals offers various advantages, lower costs, simplicity management, high efficiencies. The most utilized material iron (ZVI). Aluminium (ZVA), magnesium (ZVM), copper (ZVC), zinc (ZVZ) are alternative studied well aqueous solutions. To best our knowledge, comprehensive work on use materials employed still missing. Therefore, in present review, recent papers concerning were analysed. studies dealt with discussed by considering microscopic (mZVI) nanoscopic (nZVI) forms. For each Fe0 form, effects initial pH, presence or absence dissolved oxygen, concentration, temperature, ions process separately evaluated. Finally, different support nanoparticles examined. other tested, detailed description works literature was carried out. A comparison features related considered also made.

High-level arsenite removal from groundwater by zero-valent iron.

The objectives of this study were to conduct batch and column studies to (i) assess the effectiveness of zero-valent iron for arsenic remediation in groundwater, (ii) determine removal mechanisms of arsenic, and (iii) evaluate implications of these processes with regard to the stability of arsenic and long-term remedial performance of the permeable reactive barrier (PRB) technology. A high conc...

Perchlorate removal by acidified zero-valent aluminum and aluminum hydroxide.

Removal of perchlorate using either acid-washed zero-valent aluminum or aluminum hydroxide was studied in batch reactors under ambient temperature and pressure. Approximately 90-95% of perchlorate was removed within 24h in the presence of 35 g L(-1) aluminum at acidic pH (4.5+/-0.2). Although aluminum is a strong reductant, this study indicated no explicit evidence to support perchlorate reduct...

Removal of Nitrate/atrazine Contamination with Zero-valent Iron-promoted Processes

This research project is designed to study the feasibility of removing or remediating nitrate/atrazine in groundwater using iron powder treatment. Iron powder was selected because it is cheap and nontoxic. Three different types of iron powders were used in this research. They were lab grade iron powder (about 0.02 micron in size), industrial grade iron powder (about 0.5 micron in size), and rus...

Evaluation on the Nanoscale Zero Valent Iron Based Microbial Denitrification for Nitrate Removal from Groundwater

Nanoscale zero valent iron (NZVI) based microbial denitrification has been demonstrated to be a promising technology for nitrate removal from groundwater. In this work, a mathematical model is developed to evaluate the performance of this new technology and to provide insights into the chemical and microbial interactions in the system in terms of nitrate reduction, ammonium accumulation and hyd...
